Hybrid Prosthesis

Vascular grafts are permanently exposed to the blood stream, making them highly prone to adverse foreign body responses. Despite years of research fully blood-compatible synthetic materials remain a utopia, especially for small diameter graft applications. Synthetic materials fail to reproduce the complex antithrombogenic natural mechanisms of the human body and often lead to thrombus formation and implant occlusion.

Combining current available synthetic materials and endothelial cells could contribute to increase the long-term performance of current prosthesis and broaden their scope of application.
